THINGS THAT MAKE OTHER THINGS STOP
Everything You Can Use to End a Conversation Permanently.
Melee
Always available. Always personal. Always leaves marks.
No structural integrity whatsoever. On a natural 20: you have somehow knocked someone unconscious with a magazine. Neither of you will ever fully understand what happened.
Free. Everywhere. Laughed at until it isn't. Bypasses light armor — the point finds gaps. On a natural 20: lodged somewhere it shouldn't be. Removal costs a surgery roll.
The weapon of institutions. Passes every search. Has been used in four wars. Bypasses soft armor — thin enough to find gaps that weren't designed to be gaps. Very personal.
PRE DR 10 to remove mid-fight. On a success: now armed. Also: no longer wearing both shoes. On max damage: lodged. TOU DR 12 to remove.
The sound of it hitting something is different from a human fist. People notice.
Free. Everywhere. Breaks on a 1. The jagged edge is the point.
Concealable. PRE to hide from search. Most people in this city carry one.
Concealable in a closed fist. Passes every search. On a critical: deep laceration, target bleeds d2 HP per round until treated. Very personal weapon.
Small military folding shovel. Three uses: dig, hit, throw (counts as thrown object). On a natural 20: used in a way the manufacturer didn't intend and cannot explain. It works.
Free. Everywhere. Breaks on a natural 1 — deals d2 damage to wielder's hand. On a natural 20: a specific cut the target will explain to doctors for the rest of their life.
The mightier weapon. Always available. Always overlooked. Ceramic body passes metal detectors. On a critical: lodged in something load-bearing. Surgically significant.
Silent. Requires both hands and position behind target (AGI DR 12). Once established: automatic d4 per round until one party succeeds STR DR 14 to break free.
150 lire or free from any ruin. The weight is what matters.
On max damage: choose a specific injury (finger, tendon, ear).
Ignores most armor. Androids: additional PRE test DR 12 or panic (Glitch roll).
Surgeon class only (or anyone with terrible judgment). Automatic limb damage on a critical.
Also opens things. A crowbar in Rome is a weapon, a tool, and a statement of intent simultaneously. On max damage: the thing you hit is structurally compromised.
Someone's leg. Or arm. It has a name engraved on it. You didn't ask whose. The balance is wrong but the weight is right. On a critical: the limb's original owner finds out. Eventually.
Reach: attack from one zone back. On a natural 1 it bends irreversibly — now d3. The Zerocalcare Collective is going to want it back.
Blunt. On max damage: discharge — everyone in melee range makes AGI DR 12 or blinded for d2 rounds. Two uses before empty. Then it's a d4 blunt object.
TOU DR 12 or stunned one round. Androids: automatic Glitch roll additionally. Battery lasts d6 uses. SecCorp used to issue these. They stopped. This one survived.
Reach. On a natural 20: target entangled — loses next action. On a natural 1: you are entangled. The city notes the irony.
Holds 20 nails. Each shot is a separate attack action. On a natural 20: target pinned to whatever surface is behind them (STR DR 14 to free). Compressor runs out after d6 rounds of continuous use.
Loud. Obvious. Requires fuel. Perfect. 600 lire. On a critical: something comes off that can't go back on.
STR test to wield effectively. Horrifying to everyone. More horrifying to androids.
Two-handed. STR DR 12 to wield effectively or AGI −1 this round. On a critical: something specific breaks — joint, implant, structural element. The GM specifies what.
Illegal modification. Ignores non-metal armor entirely. Runs d6 combat rounds before battery fails — then it's a d4 knife. 1200 lire. Worth it.
Ranged
All targets in 5 meters: PRE DR 14 or blinded and deafened for d4 rounds. Androids roll Glitch. 250 lire. Almost sporting.
4-meter radius of total visual obscurity for d4 rounds. Everyone inside: PRE −3 to all sight-based tests. Androids with thermal sensors: unaffected. 150 lire. The Vatican uses these. Make of that what you will.
Electronics within 6 meters disabled for d4 rounds. Androids: automatic Glitch roll, Power −1 permanently. SecCorp equipment reboots (d4 rounds offline). Device destroys itself. 800 lire. Extremely illegal. Extremely useful.
Cone: everyone in 5 meters makes TOU DR 14 or incapacitated with vertigo d4 rounds — all tests at −4. Androids: automatic Glitch. User takes d2 backsplash damage per use. Originally a crowd control device. The crowd it was tested on disbanded permanently.
AGI to inject in melee. Effect varies by contents. Ask the Chemist.
Silent. 6 darts. Without a Chemist: d6 — 1–3 sedative (TOU DR 12 or unconscious d4 hours), 4–6 bad batch. With a Chemist: whatever they want. Passes weapons checks on PRE DR 12.
Weighted steel. Garrote-capable at close range (STR vs STR). Passes every weapons check. PRE DR 12 to use in combat or entangled. Masters are feared.
PRE to hit accurately. The city provides ammunition constantly.
PRE DR 10 to catch on return or take d2 damage. Ignores cover on 18+. Silent. Nobody respects it until it hits them in the back of the head.
Target TOU DR 14 or lose d4 STR for 1 hour. Chemist class. Also effective on plants.
Silent. Unlimited ammunition — Rome is entirely made of small rocks and scrap. On a natural 20: the specific rock has done something remarkable. The GM describes what.
On impact: 3-meter fire radius, d4 fire damage per round until extinguished. Free if you can find a bottle and something flammable. On a natural 1: drops. Where it lands: the GM decides.
Dissolves: clothing, light armor (−1 Armor permanently per round), skin (d4/round), most metals (d2/round). 4-round tank. On a natural 1: sprays the user. Androids: circuits exposed, roll Glitch. 600 lire per refill from the right Chemist.
Cone: everything in 4-meter arc takes d4/round from microwave radiation — no visible beam, just a growing sensation of being cooked. Androids: Power −1 per round additionally. 3-round battery. 100% illegal. CogniData built three. Nobody knows where the other two are.
500 lire. Jams on a 1. Made from parts that never should have been together.
12 rounds. Traceable. Everyone knows where you got it.
Silent. Bolts retrievable. Anachronistic. Beloved by exactly the right kind of person.
Part of the body. Cannot be disarmed or taken at the door. Rogue Android only.
Illegal modification. 8 shots. Quiet enough that people two streets over think it's a door slamming. People one street over know exactly. −3 Heat generation from noise. 1800 lire.
Silent. Bolts retrievable. Requires one action to nock and draw — cannot fire and move in the same round. On a natural 20: target pinned to surface (STR DR 14 to free). Bolt stays in until removed: 1 HP and either a Surgeon or a very steady hand.
Homemade. 3-meter blast, d6 to everyone. Additionally: everyone within 6 meters takes d4 shrapnel regardless. TOU DR 10 to build — on a fail, detonates during construction. 80 lire in parts. Zerocalcare knows how.
Close range only. 2 shots before reload. The sound permanently ends conversations.
6-meter arc, maintained. Targets keep burning d4/round. Fuel for 6 rounds. Androids: PRE DR 12 or Glitch. Illegal. Bulky. Magnificent.
PRE +2 when target is more than 30 meters away. Useless at melee: PRE −4. 5 shots. Bolt-action: one action to rechamber after each shot. SecCorp will investigate the sound. 900 lire.
Single shot. Reload takes 2 full rounds. On a natural 20: target pinned to whatever is behind them. On a natural 1: jammed — full scene to clear. Originally designed for underwater use.
30 rounds. Military issue. If you have one, someone is looking for it. And for you.
100-round belt. Full-auto: roll three attack dice, take highest, deal damage to everything in a cone including bystanders. SecCorp Heat +2 per round of full-auto. Requires STR +1 or AGI −2. 2500 lire. Not for sale legally.
RARE — Designed to stop vehicles. 6 shots. STR +1 or lose next action from recoil. Illegal everywhere. On a critical: the target ceases to be structurally sound.
Designed to stop vehicles. Also stops walls, light cover, body armor of any type. Two-round magazine. Set-up: one full round. Shot heard across a district. +3 Heat with all factions simultaneously. 4000 lire.
4-meter blast. AGI DR 14 or full damage; success = half. Bounces on a 1. Single use. 400 lire black market.
6-meter blast, d6 concussion to 12 meters. One shot. Launcher becomes d4 club. You will be heard. You will be found. Was it worth it.
MYTHIC — Nobody knows where it came from. The GM puts down their notes. The wielder does not survive. Neither does the district. The city remembers. The city does not forgive.
Ammo & Reloading
Mark a use each time you fire. At 0 uses the weapon is empty. Reloading costs a full action. Spare rounds: 50 lire per 10, if you can find a seller. Natural 1 on a ranged attack: jam, misfire, or empty. The GM decides which, based on what's most inconvenient.
